While colourless diamonds reign supreme in the jewellery world, there is one type of diamond that might very well knock them off the top spot. That is pink diamonds. Boasting the most romantic pink hues, pink diamond jewellery is one of the most in-demand types of diamonds on the market today. They are also some of the most scarce.

Somewhat of an enigma, pink diamonds are found in very few mines in countries such as Australia, Russia, India, Brazil, South Africa and Canada. Up until recently, the largest producer of these vibrant stones was the Argyle mine. Situated in the East Kimberly region of Western Australia, the Argyle mine is known for producing pink stones of exceptional quality and vibrancy. Even a 0.50-carat diamond from the Argyle mine will set you back around $50,000, while a 2-carat pink diamond, on the other hand, can sell for a jaw-dropping $500,000.

But with the Argyle mine now closed and its stock all but cleared out, one question remains: where do we source pink diamonds for jewellery now?

Fortunately, there is a more affordable and eco-friendly solution in the form of Luminesce Lab Grown diamonds. Despite being man-made, lab-grown diamonds and their many varieties such as pink diamonds ARE real diamonds. They are so indistinguishable that if you could hold up a natural pink diamond next to a lab-grown pink diamond you likely wouldn’t be able to tell the difference without specialised gemological equipment.

So, they look like, feel like and are certainly as eye-catching as natural diamonds, but are lab grown pink diamonds worth buying? Read on to find out and see answers to all your other burning lab grown pink diamond questions.

Overview:

Are Lab Grown Pink Diamonds Worth Buying?

While they might not be as prized as naturally mined pink diamonds (particularly those that herald from the Argyle), lab-grown pink diamonds are certainly nothing to sneeze at. One advantage of man-made diamonds is that they allow you to get your hands on a bigger, brighter and better quality stone for a fraction of the price. The same goes for coloured diamonds. Ordinarily, the more vibrant the hue of a coloured diamond, or ‘Fancies’ as they are often called, the more valuable they will be. Meaning you could potentially purchase more vibrantly coloured diamonds, including pink diamonds for a lot less money.

Another aspect that makes pink lab-grown diamonds worthwhile is that they are easy to maintain. While they may not form in the same way as their natural counterparts, they do share the same structural characteristics. And as earth-mined diamonds rank at 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, naturally, so do lab-grown diamonds. This means lab-grown diamonds are up there as one of the toughest and most durable minerals on earth. Lab-grown diamonds also never lose their colour or become cloudy, which is another major benefit.

So yes, lab-grown pink diamonds are worth buying.

How Are Lab-Grown Pink Diamonds Made?

Starting as a tiny diamond seed, Luminesce Lab-Grown pink diamonds are created using a method referred to as Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). One of the more recent methods used to produce lab-grown diamonds, Chemical Vapor Deposition involves placing a diamond seed (which is usually a piece of a natural diamond) into a sealed chamber and exposing it to carbon-rich gases like methane and hydrogen, as well as high temperature. These gases are then ionised and melted into a liquid plasma using specialised equipment that generates magnetic waves similar to how a microwave does. From there, an uncut diamond is formed.

While there are other methods to create lab diamonds such as High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT), pink lab-grown diamonds are almost always created through Chemical Vapor Deposition. CVD creates an ultra-low pressure environment, which is the complete opposite of how pink diamonds are believed to have formed within the earth’s crust. So, instead of deforming the lattice structure of the diamond through excessive pressure, irradiation is used to help change the structure of the crystal lattice, which in turn changes its colour to a brilliantly vibrant pink.

Are Lab-Grown Pink Diamonds More Eco-Friendly?

It isn’t just their lower price point that has many women across the globe embracing these man-made marvels. One benefit of pink lab-grown diamonds is that they are more eco-friendly than natural pink diamonds. The amount of energy used to retrieve natural diamonds from the earth’s crust is immense, resulting in a larger carbon footprint. Fortunately, man-made diamonds do not require the same amount of energy, nor do they require any earth-moving equipment and therefore their environmental impact is not as great.

Now more than ever, people are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of the things that they wear, the products they use and the food that they consume. So, naturally this extends to the jewellery, particularly the diamond jewellery that they choose to purchase. Hence why more women and even more couples who are looking to take the next big step in their relationship are choosing to embrace lab grown diamonds over naturally-mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds also have a more transparent supply chain that makes it easier to track their carbon footprint.
